David Manjarres in the News!

Being a Parent in the Time of COVID-19:  New Law Provides Extended Leave for Parents.

David Manjarres recently spoke to Univision Chicago regarding a new law that, in certain circumstances, provides parents of school-age children with extended paid leave when they are unable to go to work or to telework.  Univision anchor Natalie Perez’ complete story (in Spanish) can be found here:

https://www.univision.com/local/chicago-wgbo/conoce-la-ley-que-permite-a-padres-trabajadores-quedarse-en-casa-mientras-sus-hijos-esten-en-clases-virtuales-video

As the Univision Chicago report by Natalie Perez states, in March of 2020, Congress, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, passed the Families First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA).  Among other things, the law requires employers of less than 500 employees to provide a paid leave of up to 12 weeks to employees who have been employed for more than 30 days and are unable to go to work or to telework because the employee is caring for his or her child (or children) because the child’s school or place of care is closed (or child care provider is unavailable) due to COVID-19 related reasons.  The amount of pay is 2/3 the employee’s regular rate up to a maximum of $200 per day and $12,000 total.  The 12 weeks of leave available is a total of 12 weeks between any Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave and FFCRA leave.  The new law is in effect from April 1, 2020 through the end of 2020.
